Junípero Serra (at age 61, ten years before his death)

Biography

Spanish monk and Professor of Philosophy who came to California on 9/17/1776. He founded a chain of 21 missions and schools for the native Indians from San Diego to San Francisco. In walking the land he injured his feet and suffered the rest of his days. His sainthood was formally proposed in 1934 and marked the beginning of a long, drawn out process to canonization. Nine years later, in 1943, Serra's remains were exhumed to affirm his remains. During the years of 1948 and 1949, public hearings were held in order to assure that he lived "a life of heroic virtue." Things stalled for 36 years before any further action was taken towards Serra's sainthood. Then, in 1985, copious documentation and 200 testimonies were accepted by Pope John Paul II, who venerated Serra during the same year. Three years later, he was beatified after his initial miracle was verified. In order to become a saint, however, two miracles must be verified. Enthusiasm among members of the Catholic faith for Serra's sainthood remains high, and members regularly pray for another miracle to be found so that he can become a saint.

Died 8/28/1784, Monterey, CA.

Source Notes

LMR quotes Omer Englebert "Last of the Conquistadors," 1956, p.4. Blackwell quotes same data from W.E. Wise "Fray Junipera Serra and the California Conquest" which cites Fray F. Palou's "Historic Account of the Life and Apostolic Labors of the Neverable Junipera Serra." (Palou was Serra's closest friend.)

Sy Scholfield notes that birth records contain both 1 a.m. and 1 p.m. as related in a footnote in "Life of Fray Junípero Serra" by Francisco Palóu (Academy of American Franciscan History, 1955), p. 316: "A transcript of Father Serra's baptismal record, sent by Rev. Juan Coll from Petra, August 30, 1912, bearing the seal of the parish, is in SBMA. It is written in the Mallorcan of that period and reads as follows: "Als 24 obre de 171 3 baprizi yo Barte. Lledo pre. y Vicari a Miquel Joseph Serre fille de Ant0. y de Margu. Ferrer conj8. Foren padrins Barte. Fiol y Sebastiana Serra. nasque dit die a la una despues de mitje nit. [born at one in the night] — Barte. Lledo. pre. Vic1. — " The entry number was 85. Since then, however, a photograph of the original record has been obtained. A duplicate of the Petra records in the Episcopal Archives in Palma curiously states that Serra was born at one o'clock in the afternoon: "a la una despues del mitg dia." Palou follows the indication of the original Petra register."

Scholfield adds that a photo of the baptismal entry is available online [1].
