British diplomat, who was captured and tortured by the Japanese in Singapore. He spoke Chinese, Japanese, German and Dutch, and after WW2 he served in the British Embassy in Washington, before returning to Singapore as Commissioner-General. In 1961 he became Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence.
He died 26 February 1982.
