Czech businessman who joined the Nazi party and became a double agent, managing to shuffle Jews through his factory rolls and getting them out of the country. He saved the lives of probably a thousand Jews, considering them "his" Jews. He died 9 October 1994.

The film "Schindler's List" won the Best Picture Oscar on 21 March 1994.

The documentary made it clear that he went out of his way to continue his heroic task, wheeling and dealing, and toward the end of the war, taking in starving concentration camp survivors.

The Depression bankrupted his family's business and he joined the Nazi Party. Czechoslovakia was invaded in 1939 and he "followed on the heels of the SS" when Poland was subsequently invaded. He became a member of the GIA (German Intelligence Agency) and collected information on Poles. This membership was to stand him in good stead later on.

The terrible liquidation of the Warsaw ghetto was apparently the turning point for Schindler. He eventually spent 4 million marks, a fabulous sum for that time, in saving the Jewish people under his care.

"When asked, Schindler told that his metamorphosis during the war was sparked by the shocking immensity of the Final Solution. In his own words: 'I hated the brutality, the sadism, and the insanity of Nazism. I just couldn't stand by and see people destroyed. I did what I could, what I had to do, what my conscience told me I must do. That's all there is to it. Really, nothing more.'"

"His birth place is usually given as Czechoslovakia; in the docu. it was said to be a small industrial town of Zwittau, in the Moravian province of Czechoslovakia. Time unknown."
