Hermann Schiff

Biography

German writer, poet, actor and musician, and the cousin of poet Heinrich Heine.

After studying philosophy in Göttingen, Berlin and Jena (where he wrote his doctorate in 1825) he focussed on music and literature. He moved to Leipzig, where he edited the literary magazine Der Dichterspiegel redigierte (Poetry mirror). Afterwards he moved to Berlin, where he worked on various magazines. In 1835 he returned to Hamburg were he worked as a journalist. To earn a living, he was also an actor, fencing master, poet, musician, ballet dancer and copyist. He lived in great need and died a baptized Protestant in the poorhouse in Hamburg on 1 April 1867. He was still buried in the Jewish cemetery, as the document of baptism could not be found.
