Italian Catholic bishop, abbot and scholar, the half-brother of the famous neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova. Giovanni Battista was born from the second marriage of the artist's mother, Angela Zardo, to Francesco Sartori. For a good part of his life Giovanni Battista Sartori was assistant, secretary and confidant of his stepbrother, who helped in the erection of the colossal Temple of Possagno, and to which he dedicated a museum in the centre of his native town, the Gipsoteca. Giovanni Battista Sartori died at age 82 on 18 July 1858 in Possagno.
