Brazilian engineer and politician, currently serving as deputy governor of the state of Pernambuco, elected in 2018 as the first woman to occupy the position. Santos is affiliated with the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB), of which she is the national president.
She graduated in electrical engineering at the Federal University of Pernambuco, where she was vice president of the National Union of Students (UNE). She assumed the mandate of state deputy in 1996 and was elected in 1998.
In 2000, representing PCdoB she was elected as the first Communist mayor of Brazil, in Olinda, Pernambuco, and was re-elected in 2004, in the first round, where she served until 2008. She was secretary of Science and Technology in 2009, leaving the position in the beginning of 2010 to apply and to be elected federal deputy.
In 2015, she was chosen as president of the national directory of PCdoB, and was reappointed to the presidency of the party during the 14th Congress of PCdoB, held in November 2017.
