Biography
French actress at the Comédie-Française and a model for Auguste Renoir.
Jeanne Samary attended the Paris drama school from 1871 to 1874 and passed with distinction. In the same year she became a member of the Comédie-Française and debuted on 24 August 1874 as Dorine in Tartuffe by Molière. Jeanne Samary excelled in numerous roles in the comedies, but also in parts by Éduard Pailleron (L'Étincelle; La Monde ou l'on s'ennuie).
Renoir painted her around a dozen times in the period 1877–1880, and Louise Abbéma painted her twice.
On 9 November 1880 in Paris (9th arr.) she married Paul Lagarde (brother of the painter Pierre Lagarde), with whom she had three children. Shortly before her death she wrote a children's book entitled "Les gourmandises de Charlotte" for their children, illustrated by the artist Job.
She died of typhoid fever at 5 AM on 18 September 1890 in Paris, aged 33.
