Biography
Italian ecclesiastic, a Roman Catholic priest, Cardinal and Archbishop Emeritus of Turin, he has been the titular head of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of the Praetorian Barracks in Turin. He resigned as Archbishop of Turin on June 19, 1999, because of illness
Ordained a priest on May 31, 1947 in the Milan, he went on with his theological studies. From 1952 to 1967, he taught Sacred Scripture at the seminary of Venegono. In 1967 he was named parish priest and on April 24, 1979 he was named Prelate of Honor of His Holiness.
On November 10, 1984 he was named titular Bishop of Gaudiaba and Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Milan. Five years later, on January 31, 1989, he was named Archbishop of Turin. He was also named Vice-President of the North of the Italian Episcopal Conference, a post he held until 1995.
He was made Cardinal by John Paul II on June 28, 1991 and has been the Pope's representative on matters related to the Shroud of Turin.
