Biography
American actress, first known as Claudia Barbour-Roberts on the radio soap, "One Man's Family," a highly popular show that made its debut on 11/04/1949. Saint worked in theater and films in the 1950s and 1960s. She won acclaim for "On the Waterfront" opposite Marlon Brando, winning the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress on 3/30/1955. For many years, the actress lived in New York City, finally moving permanently to Los Angeles in the late 1960s.
A native of Newark, New Jersey, Saint went to New York City to become an actress. She worked in the gritty realism acting school of Elia Kazan. After her warm reception in "On the Waterfront," she continued film roles in "Raintree County," 1957, "North by Northwest," 1959, "Exodus," 1960, "Thirty-Six Hours," 1964 and "Nothing in Common" in 1986 with Jackie Gleason and Tom Hanks. She appeared in the TV movie, "Last Days of Patton," 1986 with George C. Scott.
Saint married her husband, television and theater director Jeffrey Hayden, 10/27/1951. The couple lived in New York City, spending their weekends on a boat with other couples. In 1965, the couple produced son Darrell and in 1969 they added daughter Laurette to the family. They moved to Los Angeles that year with their two children. Wanting to remain close to the sea, they built a beach home in Montecito overlooking Miramar Beach near Santa Barbara, California. They also own a Los Angeles condo. By the '90s, Saint and her husband have been married over 40 years. They see each other as a team and spend much of their time walking along the seashore on the weekends away from Los Angeles.
