Biography
Indian traditional guru, a healer known for his remarkable physical manifestations. He claimed to be the Avatar, the incarnation of God on Earth. He healed people suffering from many illnesses, from heart attacks to strokes. Sai Baba preached his message that he had incarnated in order to relieve suffering and bring people to a higher level of being. He was said to be able to materialize objects such as precious gems from his mouth and produce ashes from the air with which to cure the sick.
His mother, Easwaramma, gave birth to her fourth child, naming him Satyanarayana. At the age of three and four-years-old, the toddler refused to stand in the kitchen or be anywhere where animals were slaughtered and cooked for food. At a young age, he displayed his sympathy for human suffering. While he was still a child, the other children recognized him as a group leader and followed his guidance. At the age of seven, he composed devotional songs for the village opera. In elementary school, he had a great capacity for learning but never spoke more than the necessary minimum. He refused to participate in sports and games that inflicted pain or cruelty.
At the age of ten, the boy began to sing and talk about the Glory of God. He displayed unpredictable behavior by sometimes laughing and weeping to himself for no apparent reason. His parents were fearful of his mental health and visited the local priests for help. His symptoms were judged to be hysteria by his parents, relatives and temple priests. His parents took the child to medical doctors to find a cure for his disease. On 23 May 1940, Sathya rose from his bed and gave his family sugar candy and flowers. His grandfather asked him, "Who are you?" He replied, "I am Sai Baba."
On 20 October 1940, he left to school but soon returned. His relatives saw a halo around his face. He was ready to start his work issuing miracles to the people. Sai Baba preached to his congregations that everyone must follow his own religious faith intelligently and rationally. His miracles are meant to encourage people into bravely following a spiritual path. Miracles are the media to express God's infinite Mercy and Love. Sai Baba lectured around the world to large audiences. Even in Hollywood, California, on Sunset Blvd. and east of Fairfax, one may find a Sai Baba Spiritual Center.
Starting in 2000, a different story began to emerge about the alleged saint with the Internet as the primary communication vehicle. Anecdotes about his childhood and his miracles proved elusive to trace or verify. Such accusation began to proliferate as tales of deceit, fraud, murder, undesired sexual intimacies with men and even with minors. There are further disclaimers, such as the following, "In India today there is a man who claims to be God himself, an avatar. He claims to be all forms of God, perfect and pure. His followers claim that he performs many miracles. He is said to materialize sacred ash, rings, watches and other objects out of air. He allegedly heals the sick, saves followers from fatal accidents, and even raises the dead. Is Sai Baba who he claims to be (God) or is he an imposter and trickster?
"Strong evidence indicates that many of the "miracles" are illusions and fakery. But it is far worse than this. A large number of young victims have come forward and signed statements claiming that SB has sexually molested them. There are now many accounts of young people who have been coerced into oral sex and other sexual activities against their will."
Since the publication of a document [on the internet] titled "The Findings," March 2000, compiled by David and Faye Bailey, quite a few devotees of Sri Sathya Sai Baba have become ex-devotees.
Sexuality in Sai Baba’s teachings comes across as a force that takes away a devotee’s focus on his/her spiritual growth, and ought to be mainly used for pro-creation. Males and females are rigidly separated in the ashram life, and only married couples are allowed to share rooms. For a long time, up to the last few years, Sai Baba invited only male devotees for a ‘private interview’, a meeting in which a person is alone with Sai Baba. He never called in a woman alone. The first person to write about his private interview was the American Tal Brooke, who stayed with Sai Baba for a year and a half during 1970-1971. He wrote that Sai Baba had hugged him in private interviews, and, with his hand, tried to get Brooke aroused.
Around 1980 there was uproar in Malaysia when some members began a quiet campaign to discredit Sai Baba after they had conducted personal investigations of his life-style and behavior. This campaign to expose Sai Baba comprises mainly taped revelations by several Malaysian Indian students who claimed that they had been sexually abused by Sai Baba. The sexual issue began to be discussed among devotees in Holland, when the story of Baba’s hugging and genital fondling Keith Ord (UK) during his private interviews in the Spring of 1990, came out in a national weekly magazine. A group of American male devotees, under leadership of Roger Delano Hinkins, the founder of the Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, was invited in for interview. "The five-minute private ceremony involved "anointing the genitalia with ‘bachelor oil’.
In 2001, some twenty cases were documented from information found on the internet in which male devotees had to drop their pants, and either their genitals were ‘massaged’ (not always with sexual arousal taking place), or Sai Baba hugged and fondled them, and even forced them to accept or give oral gratification.
Similar encounters have also been experienced with minors. Undeniable testimonies come from a boy aged 15, and from ‘Sam Young’, age 16 at the time. Even more alarming is a letter Basava Premanand received in December 1998, written by one of the students at a Sai Baba school in Puttaparthy. The student explained in detail how some teachers make sure that the good-looking, young boys (age seven and up), are in front when coming for darshan. If a boy pleases Sai Baba, ‘Babaji’ offers him an invitation. It was well known Baba Ji had a weakness for such boys, generally not even in their teens.
The allegations of monetary accumulation, financial fraud and control of Indian government officials by Sai Baba and the Sai org come largely from Hari Sampath, a past Indian security guard in the ashram, and Robert Priddy, a long-time officer in the organization who now lives in Norway. These allegations have been published on the internet in 2001-2002. Other supporting statements are on the internet from others, and personal stories have been passed around via e-mail and telephone. One needs to sort through massive web site entries to find all the specific details.
He died in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, India on 24 April 2011, aged 84.

Ruth Dewey quotes Dobyns for Sunrise given by one of his followers.
Richard Houck quotes "The Sathya Sai Baba Compendium," compiled and edited by Brian Steel, Sam Weiser, 1997.
A different birthdate was mentioned in the book by R. Padmanaban, "Love is my Form," Vol. 1, The Advent (1926-1950), Bangalore: Sai Towers Publishing, 2000: pages 68, 132-133, 147. The date proposed is October 4, 1929, and it is discussed on several websites: http://www.snowcrest.net/sunrise/SBBirth.htm
It is proposed that Sai Baba lied about his birth date and the dates in his life’s events, as evidenced by school records and other documents. "It is well known publicly that Sri Aurobindo declared on November 24th 1926 , that "Krishna consciousness had descended into the physical," and proposed that this was the motivation for Sai Baba to declare this date as his birth date."
