German botanist and plant physiologist whose official botanical author abbreviation is "Ruhland". Ruhland founded the journal "Planta" (Archive for Scientific Botany) together with Hans Winkler in 1925, but also pursued scientific and historical interests. A member of the Leopoldina, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, the Göttingen Academy of Sciences, the Prussian Academy of Sciences and the Saxon Academy of Sciences, he crowned his life's work with the publication of the Handbuches der Pflanzenphysiologie (Handbook of Plant Physiology) in 18 volumes (1955-1967). He died on 5 January 1960 in Unterdeufstetten.
