Louis Rousselet (Portrait with beard, 1875)


French writer, photographer, pioneer of the darkroom, and traveller. His photographic work now commands high prices.

He was in India from 1864 to 1870. He spent much time in central India (Alwar, Baroda, Bhopal, Gwalior, Udaipur and Rajasthan). His photograph collection and travel book L'Inde des Rajahs: Voyage Dans l'Inde Centrale (1875) document court life. Other photographs were of monuments and temples.

He died in Paris in December 1929.

In April 2016, Sy Scholfield submitted birth certificate n°339 from the online Pyrénées-Orientales archives, image 460/562. He was given his mother's surname, Party, with father's surname, Rousselet, later recorded in the margin.
