John D. Sr. Rockefeller

Biography

American industrialist and founder of Standard Oil Company, he is widely considered the wealthiest American of all time, and the richest person in modern history. Indeed, John D. Rockefeller became the world's first confirmed U.S. dollar billionaire in 1916, and still holds the title of history's wealthiest individual. The son of a penniless, bigamous con man and patent-medicine salesman, he turned his shady family name into a synonym for prodigious wealth and worldly success.

A strict evangelical Baptist, he had no trouble reconciling his principles with unethical business practices, mandating the industry, forcing competitors out of business, bribing officials and blithely ignoring attempts to limit his rapacious accumulation of power.

At the time of his retirement in 1902, his fortune was estimated at more than one billion dollars. At the same time, he was a philanthropist who established four great charitable corporations. He was married and had five kids.

Rockefeller died of arteriosclerosis at 4:05 A.M. on 23 May 1937, less than two months shy of his 98th birthday, in Ormond Beach, Florida, leaving an estate of more than $26 million, most of which passed to his son, John D. Jr, before his death.

Source Notes

On 5 December 2007, PT changed the birth year from 1838 to 1839 based on the biography by Ron Chernow, Titan, published in 1998. Chernow writes: "In 1838, Eliza (Rockefeller’s mother) gave birth to their first child, Lucy,…." Then Chernow writes: "On the night of July 8, 1839, Bill and Eliza (parents) again summoned the midwife, this time to deliver a boy….." This date is consistent with that which is given at the Rockefeller Archive Center online.

Sy Scholfield quotes from John D. Rockefeller: Anointed with Oil by Grant Segall (Oxford University Press, USA, 2001), p. 13: "The Rockefellers named their first child Lucy, for Bill's mother. Seventeen months later, on the night of July 8, 1839, Eliza went into labor again in the parents' small bedroom.... the baby came fast, just before midnight."

In earlier versions of AstroDatabank, LMR gave July 8, 1838 citing: Penfield Collection quotes Alan Nevins for "just before midnight." The biography gives the date on p.22 and no time. AFA DX quotes Troinski for "shortly before midnight," no source. Sabian Symbols No.799 gives July 8/9, 1838. Keene gives 3:47 PM in MA 4/30. Discepolo has 4:00 PM.
