German-American historian of the 20th century, whose original interest was in the 16th century until he was drawn by the events through which he lived into writing about the Germany of his day. An opponent of Nazism on nationalistic and conservative grounds, he wrote a vindication of the German Resistance in 1958. Ritter spent his last working years at Cambridge, 1944-1947, where he wrote a three-volume "Lectures on Economic Principles." His work includes "Luther, His Life and Work" and "The Corrupting Influence of Power."
