French marine scientist, who served as managing director of the Musée océanographique de Monaco (Oceanographic Museum of Monaco) from 1900 to 1945. He earned his PhD at the Sorbonne in 1891 and his MD in 1900. In 1904 he founded the Bulletin de Musée océanographique which continued until 1938. He died in Monaco on 24 January 1945, aged 81. He is depicted on a 2013 postage stamp in Monaco, which commemorates the 150th anniversary of his birth.
