Biography
American test tube baby, the first in the U.S. More than two dozen babies have been born using the same frozen embryo technique in Australia, England, Israel, the Netherlands and Germany. Fertility drugs are used to stimulate the mother to ovulation, producing as many as a dozen eggs. These eggs are then surgically extracted, fertilized with the father's sperm in a lab and allowed to develop for 48-72 hours. Finally, a number of fertilized eggs are implanted into the uterus in hopes that at least one will grow into a fetus; the odds of this actually occurring are five to one. In this case, four extra eggs were frozen; they were later thawed and implanted.
