Only two are 8.9's - Sanriku, Japan, 1933 and Cabo de San Francisco, near the border of Ecuador/Colombia in 1906; five are estimated to have been intensity XII: one in China in 1668, the three at New Madrid, Missouri in 1811-12, and Fort Tejon, California, 1857.
