Biography
American survivor, a young woman born in California who had relocated to Kodiak, Alaska, southwest of Anchorage. On Good Friday, 3/27/1964, 5:36:14 PM, an earthquake struck that was later estimated to be the magnitude of
She was thrown against a piece of factory machinery which mangled her arm; fortunately, she received immediate medical attention and survived, though the arm had to be amputated.
In the Catalogue of Significant Earthquakes 2000 BC - 1979, there are no quakes of magnitude 9. listed. Only two are 8.9's - Sanriku, Japan, 1933 and Cabo de San Francisco, near the border of Ecuador/Colombia in 1906; five are estimated to have been intensity XII: one in China in 1668, the three at New Madrid, Missouri in 1811-12, and Fort Tejon, California, 1857.
