Biography

French industrialist, one of the founders of Renault and a pioneer of the automobile industry.

Renault built one of France's largest automobile manufacturing concerns, which bears his name to this day. During World War I his factories contributed massively to the war effort notably so by the creation and manufacture of the first effective tank: the Renault FT tank. Accused of collaborating with the Germans during World War II, he died while awaiting trial in liberated France toward the end of 1944 under uncertain circumstances. His company was seized and nationalized by the provisional government of France although he died before he could be tried. His factories were the only ones permanently expropriated by the French government.

He died on 24 October 1944, aged 67, in Fresnes Prison, Val-de-Marne, France.

Sy Scholfield forwarded birth certificate n°231 from the online Paris municipal archives (8th arr., image 11/31): "Du quinze février mil huit cent soixante dix-sept à une heure et demie du soir. Acte de naissance de Louis, par nous reconnu du sexe masculin, né à Paris place Delaborde 14 le douze du courant à une heure un quart du soir, fils de Albert Renault, propriétaire, quarante huit ans, et de Louise Berthe Magnier, son épouse, sans profession, trente cinq ans, demeurant tous deux au domicile susdit. Déclaration faite devant nous officier de l'état civil du huitième arrondissement par le père de l'enfant, en présence de François Lozime Magnier, propriétaire, soixante ans, rue Saint-Florentin 17, aïeul de l'enfant, et de Jacques Gustave Sandoz, négociant, quarante ans, Palais Royal 147 et 148, lesquels ont signé avec nous après lecture. Signé : A. Renault, Magnien, G. Sandoz et l'officier de l'état civil."
