German surgeon, AKA Louis Rehn, who was the first to successfully conduct heart surgery, when on 7 September 1896 he repaired a stab wound suffered by 22-year-old gardener Wilhelm Justus. Previously, in 1880, he had carried out the first thyroidectomy.

He died on 29 May 1930 in Frankfurt am Main, aged 81.

The Ludwig Rehn-Prize, donated in 1973 by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Frankfurt am Main, has been awarded since 1974 for excellent scientific work in the area of general surgery.
