Biography

French physician and microbiologist, of controversial fame. He holds M.D. and Ph.D. degrees and specializes in infectious diseases.

In 1984, Raoult created the Rickettsia Unit at Aix-Marseille University (AMU). He also teaches infectious diseases in the Faculty of Medicine of Aix-Marseille University. Since 2008, Raoult has been the director of the Unité de Recherche sur les Maladies Infectieuses et Tropicales Emergentes (URMITE; in English, Infectious and Tropical Emergent Diseases Research Unit).

He gained significant worldwide attention during the COVID-19 pandemic for promoting hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for the disease. Donald Trump confessed that he tested himself using this treatment as a preventive measure, the number of victims reaching 100,000 in the USA (25 May 2020), followed by Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro who confessed he had tested positive (8 July 2020).

Further studies found no benefit to his treatment which was definitely forbidden in France (23 June 2020). Health authorities threatened Raoult with a lawsuit. He has remarked that he is interested in astrology.
