Bernardino Ramazzini

Biography

Italian physician who was an early proponent of the use of cinchona bark (from which quinine is derived) in the treatment of Malaria. His most important contribution to medicine was his book on occupational diseases, De Morbis Artificum Diatriba ("Diseases of Workers"). Ramazzini died on 5 November 1714 in Padua.

Sy Scholfield cites birth record quoted in "In ricordanze del II Centenario della morte di Bernardino Ramazzini" by A. Maggiora in "Memorie della R. Accademia di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti in Modena" (Serie III. Vol. XIII, Sezione Lettere, Modena, 1918), p. 286: "Per tanto nella. prima metà d'ottobre le ore 24 coincidevano pressapoco con le nostre 18,30 d'oggi, e quindi le 17 d'allora sarebbero le nostre 11,30 antimeridiane all'incirca, e però Bernardino Ramazzini sarebbe nato il giorno di martedì 4."

Translation: Insofar as the start and end of every 24 hours in the first half of October coincided roughly with 18:30 o'clock today, then 17:00 o'clock would be approximately 11:30 AM today, so Bernardino Ramazzini would be born on Tuesday the 4th.
