Wilhelm Röntgen

German physicist and discoverer of X-Rays. A professor of physics and Director of the Physical Institute at Wurzburg, he was a meticulous experimentalist who preferred to work alone. One day in 1895 while experimenting with a Crookes tube, he found changes in crystals with new rays emitting. His further intensive study establishes the x-rays lines. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics, 1901.

Roentgen died 2/10/1923, Munich, Germany.

Source Notes

B.R. in hand from Steinbrecher, the time 2 pm handwritten on a reply letter from the registry Remscheid-Lennep.

Sy Scholfield quotes from the biography "Shadow and Substance: The Story of Medical Radiography" by Pino Donizetti (Elsevier Science Ltd, 1967), p. 16: ". . . the birth of Lennep's greatest citizen--an event which occurred on the 27th of March 1845 at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The birth certificate, if we consult the Municipal Register, gives us a detailed account: Birth of WC Rontgen, protestant. Birth certificate No. 86. At Lennep in the district of Lennep on the 29th day of the month of March 1845, at 11 o'clock in the morning, there came before me, Carl August Theodor Wilhelm Wille, Lord Mayor, civil servant of the Municipality of Lennep, Herr Friedrich Conrad Rontgen, merchant, 44 years of age, who explained to me that to his wife Charlotte Costanze Frowein, 37 years of age, residing at Lennep, on Thursday 27th of the said month of the said year in the afternoon at 4 o'clock, in their common dwelling in Lennep, was born a child, of masculine sex, to whom were given the names Wilhelm Conrad."

As both sources quote the birth registry, but with a different time, Rodden Rating has been downgraded to C. An inquiry for a copy of the original document is on the way.
