Biography

Brazilian politician, the most controversial political character in Brazil's history. He was a writer and painter, a lawyer and professor, twice Mayor of Sao Paulo and Governor of Sao Paulo. He tried a coup d'etat but when it failed, he resigned. He was a very heavy drinker and a workaholic.

Quadros worked his way through law school by teaching Portuguese and geography at high-school level. He practiced law and taught at a University until 1945, when he entered politics. He became president of Brazil 1/31/1961 to 8/25/1961 for seven months. In an effort to combat a cost of living that had risen 500%, he fired 20,000 federal employees, put all government workers on a seven-hour day and cut government spending 30%. His resignation was meant as a power-play but was accepted by Congress, and he went back to his former post as Mayor of Sao Paulo.

Quadros died of function-failure 2/15/1992, age 75.
