Costa Rican boxer, better known as Tuzo Portuguéz. His sporting life begins at 8 years of age being a schoolboy. During this time he practiced with great ability basketball, athletics and soccer; including Don Ricardo Saprissa calls him to join Little League team. However, boxing was the sport he decided to practice in order to have a professional status. Based on hard work, sacrifice and discipline, he managed to turn professional pugil, winning several times the National Boxing Championships, and shall keep the title permanently for not having able to dethrone rival. Central America also won the status of undisputed monarch of the region. Internationally,he had the honor of being the first Costa Rican boxer to be present in the world ranking, coming to box five times at Madison Square Garden in New York, where in his first appearance he faced Beau Jack on 16 December 1949 whom he defeated. The last fight was with Tuzo Portuguéz Low Gutiérrez Nicaragua in 1962 at the National Gymnasium, the winner was Gutierrez who sent Tuzo the canvas, the Costa Rican boxer rose when the count from referee was eight and despite having raised Tuzo Low took a hand and lifted declaring winner. It was at that point where Portuguéz decided to retire and never climbed back into the ring with gloves.
He died 12 July 2013 at the age of 85.
