Biography
French mathematician and mechanical engineer, elected to the Académie des Sciences in 1868.
The son of an Englishman and a Frenchwoman, Édouard Phillips became an orphan at 16. Former student of the École Polytechnique (1840) and of the Ecole des Mines de Paris (1846), he became a Doctor of Mechanical Engineering (1849), Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Fabrices (1864-1875) and at the École Polytechnique (1866-1879). He died on 14 December 1889, aged 68, at Narmont.
