Biography
English poltergeist case in Epworth (Lincolnshire)beginning december 1 1716 (jul.cal.)(dec. 12 greg) in the house of a reverend. The parents had 19 children, but 10 were dead.One had died in 1709 when the house was burning.The foundator of the Mormons was then a child of Samuel and Susanna Wesley,which had very different views in religion.The knocking and raps were first discovered in the dining-room by a housemaiden.A mill was turning the whole time, the kids couldn't sleep fearing witchcraft.But after some days they used "Old Jeffrey"(named by Hetty) like a pet, it was part of the family.A levitation of a bed was observed.Another time a door hurt the reverend,at Christmas there were immense noises.The haunting ended in february 1717. A reason has never been founded, rather different possibilities.It is supposed Susanna or one of her children could have led to "Old Jeffrey".Grief about John and financial difficulties could have "triggered" the ghost.Samuel Wesley was twice in a debtor's prison.The case shows,too,the beginning of strange developments is in the "holy" days of december or in times with religious emotion and activity together with strong symbols.
