Biography

French terrorist murderer, who together with a colleague killed 85-year-old Roman Catholic priest Jacques Hamel, born 30 November 1930 in Darnétal, of the church of Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, during Mass. Two nuns and two churchgoers were taken hostage, in addition to Hamel. The attackers were shot and killed by Rouen's BRI police as they left the church.

He had been "on the radar of the police since 29 June 2016, after he also tried to enter Syria from Turkey. French intelligence had received his picture four days before the attack, but they were not given a name or description at that time the prosecutor’s office said. Born in St.-Dié-des-Vosges, in Lorraine, he grew up in Aix-les-Bains, south-east France. His mother told reporters that he had been visiting a cousin in northeastern France before the attack and that she did not know how he had ended up in St.-Étienne-du-Rouvray.
