Sándor Petőfi


Hungarian patriot, a soldier, actor, journalist, lyric poet and author of short stories, dramas and a novel.

He gained notoriety with his publication of "Versek" in 1844.

His poem "Nemzeti dal" ("National Song"), read at a public gathering in Pest on 15 March 1848, helped inspire the Hungarian revolution of that year.

Petofi was presumed dead after a battle at Segesvár, Transylvania on 31 July 1849 at a youthful 26.

"Petőfi", by Anton N. Nyerges (Hungarian Cultural Foundation, 1973, p. 12) states "Sándor Petőfi was born on New Year's, shortly after midnight, in 1823 in the town of Kiskörös."
