English barrister, nicknamed Paddy, who was born into a noted family. His legal career was cut short by manic depression and he took up golf.

He was the third of the eight children of the politician Frank Pakenham, 7th Earl of Longford (1905-2001) and the historian Elizabeth Longford (1906-2002).

His siblings included writer Lady Antonia Fraser, historian Thomas Packenham, writer Judith Kazantzis, writer Lady Rachel Billington, diplomat Sir Michael Aidan Pakenham, journalist Lady Catherine Rose Pakenham, and banker Kevin John Toussaint Pakenham.

Paddy Packenham married Mary Plummer and they had three children before they divorced. He died from cancer on 8 June 2005 at age 68.
