French writer who published 23 books (novels, short stories, biographies, memoirs) between 1944 and 1986. He was mainly known to the general public for his biographies. The subjects of his biographies included Roger de Bussy-Rabutin, Voltaire, Talleyrand, Jean de La Fontaine and Catherine de Médici.

He died on 8 April 1990, aged 82, in Fontenay-les-Briis, Essonne, France.
