Biography
Hereditary Grand Duke of Oldenburg as the eldest son of Friedrich August II, Grand Duke of Oldenburg, who was the last ruling Grand Duke of Oldenburg.
Nikolaus married on 26 October 1921 in Arolsen to Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1899–1948), only daughter of Friedrich, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont and his wife, Princess Bathildis of Schaumburg-Lippe. Nikolaus and Helena had nine children.
His wife died in 1948, and he married on 20 September 1950 in Güldenstein to Anne-Marie von Schutzbar gennant Milchling (1903–1991), daughter of Rudolf von Schutzbar gen. Milchling and Rose Marston. Nikolaus and Anne-Marie had no children.
In 1931, Nikolaus succeeded to his father's titles and assumed the role of pretender to the Grand Duchy, until his death on 3 April 1970.

Sy Scholfield forwarded news report from "Hamburger Nachrichten," 12 Aug. 1897: "Schwerin, den 11. August. Die „Medlenb. Nachrichten" schreiben: „Aus Oldenburg ist die frohe Kunde hier eingegangen, daß die Frau Erbgroßherzogin Elisabeth, geb. Herzogin zu Mecklenburg-Schwerin, heute früh 4¼ Uhr von einem kräftigen Prinzen glücklich entbunden worden ist." (Schwerin, 11 August. The "Medlenb[erg] News" reported: "From Oldenburg, the happy news has been received here, that the grand-granddaughter Elisabeth, née Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, this morning at four-fifteen o'clock, happily gave birth to a strong prince).
The date of birth is clarified in a news report in "Berliner Börsenzeitung," 11 Aug. 1897, p. 5: "In Oldenburg ist dem Erbprinzenpaare gestern, am Geburtstage der Erbgrossherzogin, ein Thronfolger geboren worden." (Yesterday in Oldenburg to the hereditary prince and princess, on the birthday of the hereditary grand duchess, was born an heir to the throne). NB: His mother, Duchess Elisabeth Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, was born on 10 August 1869.
