French Afro-Martiniquais teacher, writer and journalist (the eldest of 7 sisters), one of the drivers of the development of black literary. Involved in the creation of the negritude genre, she was the first black person to study at Paris Sorbonne university. After 1945, she moved to the USA and worked as secretary of diplomat and Nobel prize Ralph Bunche.
Her sister Jane (1902-93) is known as political essayist.
