Biography
American writer who, as a noted dramatist, won awards for "All My Sons" and the Pulitzer Prize for "Death Of A Salesman," 1949. Opinionated and outspoken, possibly America's most famous contemporary playwright, he began his work writing for radio prior to gaining his first Broadway success. Miller's work will remain fresh and moving, such as "The Crucible," "A View From the Bridge" and "The American Clock."
Miller grew up in a middle-class Jewish family that was defeated by the Depression. He worked in a warehouse for two years to earn his college tuition, and during his stay at the University of Michigan, found his calling as a playwright. In 1944 Miller was first published and had his production on the boards, and within three years he was a critical success.
Married from 1940-1956 to Mary Slattery, the mother of his two kids; he was then married to Marilyn Monroe from 1956-1960. By his account, he savored her wit and beauty but was driven away by her self-abasing craziness. In his later years he lived with his third wife, Morath, whom he wed in 1962, on a 350-acre ranch estate in Connecticut. He and Morath collaborated on a number of photographic books.
The playwright, whom the New York Times called the “Moral Voice of American Stage,” died at age 89 on February 10, 2005 at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut. The cause was congestive heart failure.
