Italian singer and actor, most prominently known for having rejuvenated the traditional popular Neapolitan melodrama known as the sceneggiata.
He was nicknamed the 'King of the sceneggiata' because he brought this kind of regional song unprecedented national popularity and success, and made it into a film genre, all the while becoming the face of sceneggiata.
He died, aged 72, on 12 November 2006, after having been in intensive care in San Leonardo hospital in Castellammare di Stabia (Naples), with breathing difficulties.
