Biography
American Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist in 1975 for her columns on Watergate. For fifty years, she covered presidential administrations and political issues from the 1954 McCarthy hearings through the Bush administration invasion of Iraq in 2003. She stopped writing her column in March 2003 when she suffered a stroke and she died on April 21, 2004, in Washington, D.C..
She began her career a s a book reviewer in 1947 for the Washington Star, and got her big break in 1954 when her editor sent her to Capitol Hill to cover the Army-McCarthy hearings. He encouraged her to write her columns as if "she were writing a letter to a favorite aunt."
