Archduke of Austria Maximilian Eugen (1917)

Biography

Archduke of Austria, Prince Royal of Hungary and Bohemia, and member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. He was the younger brother of the Emperor Karl I of Austria. From 10 April 1919 according to republican Austrian law his name was Maximilian Eugen Habsburg-Lothringen.

During World War I Maximilian served as a major in the Austro-Hungarian Army. He also had the rank of corvette captain in the Austro-Hungarian Navy. In June 1918 Maximilian led the Austrian assault on the Dosso Alto. The air pressure of a shell which landed near him broke his ear-drum and caused a certain deafness.

On 12 November 1918, the Provisional National Assembly of German Austria declared the country a republic. In 1919, Maximilian Eugen Habsburg-Lothringen and his family were given permission to live in Switzerland on condition that he did not engage in political activity. Maximilian's family then moved to Bavaria, where they lived in Munich and along Lake Starnberg. Later they moved to France.

Maximilian died on 19 January 1952 of a heart attack in a hotel in Nice, aged 56.

Source Notes

Originally this data had a speculative time of 3 AM (rated C), suggested by Sy Scholfield who quoted from "Court Circular," The Times (London, England), Monday, 15 April 1895, p. 7: "The Archduchess Otto of Austria was safely delivered of a son early on Saturday morning."

On 14 January 2017 Scholfield changed the birth time to 4 AM, having forwarded news report from "Bozner Nachrichten," 18 April 1895, p. 4: "Die Frau Erzherzogin Maria Josepha, Gemahlin des Herrn Erzherzogs Otto, ist Samstag, den 13. d. M., um 4 Uhr morgens in Wien von einem Erzherzoge glücklich entbunden worden" (The Archduchess Maria Josepha, the wife of Archduke Otto, was happily delivered of an Archduke at four o'clock in the morning of the 13th).

Full birth name: Maximilian Eugen Ludwig Friedrich Philipp Ignatius Joseph Maria.
