French tennis pro, a two-time Grand-Slam title holder, she emerged on the world stage in 1999 at the Australian Open finals. While she lost the match, she nevertheless established herself as a serious contender. In 2006 she won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. A year later a strained adductor muscle and an appendectomy kept her on the sidelines for two months; that year was her first in several years that she did not make the top 10 players. The following year brought additional injuries. After 10 years of playing on the professional circuit, she retired at age 30, announcing on December 3, 2009 that she no longer wanted to endure the rigorous training required to continued.
