Biography

Legendary Swiss burglar in the middle of 19th century.Born 1821 in Muhen, Bernhart Matter stole still as a boy 4 rings of gold.He was admired by the inhabitants of Aargau because he often spent the money to other people. And he was a very attractive man, a gentleman. This was one of the sources for his fame.Imprisoned several times with still rising years of punition he always found a way to outbreak,then he wrote a letter from Paris to the government of his canton. These representants wrote to Berne, if Switzerland couldn't send him to the USA, perhaps in a way of punition camp. As this was denied,they had to wait till he was caught one day in a small village.

Matter was also a smuggler,and he betrayed through his charm a woman in France using a stolen passport. Bernhart Matter was beheaded in Lenzburg may 24 in 1854. The new law against this punishment was not yet in force. His death gave much to discuss then - it was rather a vengeance of the justice.
