Belgian architect and historian of architecture who specialized in the study and rescue of monuments from the past. He completed the restoration of the Saints-Michel-et-Gudule cathedral in Brussels, taking care to preserve everything possible while refusing additions dictated by the taste for the picturesque which characterized the restorations of 19th-Century French architecture.

Martiny was the chief architect-urban planner of the Province of Brabant, a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and at the Free University of Brussels, where he gave a course in medieval archeology.

Victor-Gaston Martiny wrote numerous articles and books on the history of architecture and architects. He died on 3 February 1996 at age 80 in Uccle.
