Thierry de Martel (circa 1920)

Biography

French doctor and pioneer neurosurgeon who developed neurosurgery in France with his colleague Clovis Vincent (1879-1947). A renowned surgeon in Paris during the years 1920-1930, he contributed a great deal of specialized work which helped make neurosurgery an autonomous branch of surgery.

He was the son of Count (comte) Roger de Martel de Janville and his wife, born Sibylle de Mirabeau, a novelist known by the name of Gyp.

A top-level sportsman, he played rugby and became with his brother, A. Martel de Janville, a champion of France at the 1896 Olympics.

He died on 14 June 1940 in Paris, aged 65.
