King of Portugal Manuel II

Biography

Portuguese royalty, the former Duke of Beja before succeeding to the throne, he was the last monarch of Portugal.

Called the Patriot" (Portuguese: "o Patriota") or "the Unfortunate" (Portuguese: "o Desaventurado"), he was the last King of Portugal, ascending the throne after the assassination of his father, King Carlos I, and his elder brother, Luís Filipe, the Prince Royal.

His reign ended with the dissolution of the monarchy during the 5 October 1910 revolution, and Manuel lived the rest of his life in exile in Twickenham, Middlesex, England, where he died on 2 July 1932 at age 42.

Source Notes

Sy Scholfield quotes from The Downfall of a King: Dom Manuel II of Portugal by Russell E. Benton (University Press of America, 1977), page 1: "Dom Manuel II - was born on November 15, 1889 ... Manuel was born at 4:45 in the morning at his parents' palace in Belem in the same room where his older brother had been delivered some two years earlier. Dr. de Borba, who had attended Queen Amelia at Vila Viçosa during the birth of her infant daughter was called to Belem to assist at Manuel's birth along with the royal parteira (midwife), D. Alice Costa."

Previously this entry had 5:45 AM (rated C): British Journal of Astrology 3/1919 quotes "a Portuguese student." Modern Astrology 7/1910 gives "in the morning."
