Manuel was born at 4:45 in the morning at his parents' palace in Belem in the same room where his older brother had been delivered some two years earlier. Dr. de Borba, who had attended Queen Amelia at Vila Viçosa during the birth of her infant daughter was called to Belem to assist at Manuel's birth along with the royal parteira (midwife), D. Alice Costa."
