French sociologist of Italian origin.

Maffesoli was awarded the Grand Prix des Sciences de l'Académie française in 1992 for La transfiguration du politique. He is a member of the Institut Universitaire de France since September 2008, following a controversial nomination.

He came to the attention of the general public in April 2001 when he defended the thesis of Élizabeth Teissier about the ambivalence of the social reception of astrology, a highly contentious dissertation that he supervised.
