Biography
Costa Rican politician, lawyer and journalist. He graduated from the Liceo de Costa Rica in 1941 and then JD in Law School of the University of Costa Rica. He was President of the Student Federation of the University and was active in politics since his student days. Leading figure in the field of journalism, he was editor of the newspaper La República and chaired the Inter American Press Association. He published numerous articles in magazines and newspapers. He was delegated by San Jose from 1978 to 1982 and Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica from 1978 to 1979. From 1986 to 1990 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs and developed an active role in favor of peace and democracy in Central America . He presided over the General Assembly of the OAS in 1987. He has received numerous decorations, including the Legion of Honor of France. He promoted the creation of the Foundation for Peace and Democracy (FUNPADEM), of which he was chairman from its inception in 1988 and for thirteen years.
He died on 11 October 2006.
