Biography
American radio and television personality, host of cable program, The Rachel Maddow Show since 8 September 2008. The first openly lesbian anchor for a major U.S. prime-time news and commentary television show, Maddow is an intelligent and popular commentator for MSNBC's primarily left wing audiences.
A graduate of Stanford University and a Rhodes scholar concentrating on public policy, she earned a doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University. She began her talk show career on radio and in March 2004 she joined Air America. She began appearing on television talk shows. Her articulate and thoughtful analysis and engaging style earned her spots as guest hosts on other MSNBC's television shows. On 8 September 2008 the cable news network gave her the opportunity to host her own show, The Rachel Maddow Show. It soon zoomed to the top of the network's lineup in popularity.
Upon its release, Maddow's first book, Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power (2012), about the role of the military in postwar American politics, reached the first position of The New York Times Best Seller list for hardcover nonfiction. Maddow's second book, Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth, was released in October 2019.
On 10 September 2019, the One America News Network filed suit in federal court in San Diego, California against Maddow for $10 million, after Maddow described the network as "paid Russian propaganda" on her program on 22 July that year.
