Biography
Scottish designer and painter, regarded as one of the most outstanding architects of the 20th century. Mackintosh was a modernist in that he aspired to a living architecture rooted in the present day, counter to established practice of the time. At the turn of the century, he designed the Glasgow School of Art. He married on 22 August 1900.
In his lifetime he remained isolated from the cultural mainstream. His best period for industry and creativity was 1896-1906. After then, he gave up his attempts to influence public taste. Considered too forward, he became somewhat embittered and sank into obscurity. He personally deteriorated, becoming taciturn and morose and drinking heavily. In the fall of 1927, he developed tongue cancer and finally lost his voice, dying on 10 December 1928. When Mackintosh died, the goods of his estate sold for 88 pounds: today a single piece of his furniture commands thousands.
