Prince of Prussia (1772) Louis Ferdinand (portrait by Jean-Laurent Mosnier, 1799)


Prussian prince, soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, gifted musician and composer. Louis Ferdinand was a son of Prince August Ferdinand of Prussia and Elisabeth Louise of Brandenburg-Schwedt, and was a nephew of King Frederick the Great. He morganatically married the Catholic countess Marie Adelaide de la Grange. He had a son from the marriage, Theodor Friedrich Klitsche de la Grange, and an illegitimate son, Ludwig von Wildenbruch. Louis Ferdinand died on 10 October 1806 aged 33 during the Battle of Saalfeld. The 1927 German film Prinz Louis Ferdinand was a biopic of his life.

November 1772 im Schloß zu Friedrichsfelde geboren. In der „Berlinischen Privilegierten Zeitung" Nr. 139 vom 19. November 1772 ist die Geburt durch folgende Notiz mitgeteilt: „Gestern, des Vormittags um 9 Uhr, sind Ihro Königl. Hoheit, die Gemahlin des Prinzen Ferdinand, auf dem Lustschlosse Friedrichsfelde, abermals von einem Prinzen zur Freude des Hohen Königl. Hauses entbunden worden."

Abridged translation: Prince Louis Ferdinand was born at Friedrichsfelde Palace on 18 November 1772. The birth is reported in the "Berlin Privileged Newspaper," No. 139, 19 November 1772: 'Yesterday, in the morning at 9 o'clock, Her Royal Highness, the wife of Prince Ferdinand, was delivered of a prince at Friedrichsfelde Palace to the delight of the Royal house.'
