Source Notes
An Astrodienst forum user posted on 5 April 2013 a snippet from LIFE magazine November 8, 1948 feature article "My Story" by Joe Louis as told to Meyer Berger & Barney Nagler page 128: '(. . .) I was born May 13, 1914 in a sharecropper's shack off a dirt road that runs between Lafayette and Cusseta in Chambers County in Alabama (. . .) around 8 o'clock in the morning.' A second installment concluding the article followed in the magazine's November 15th edition. LIFE was a U.S. publication from 1936-2000. This quote allows upgrade of Rodden rating to A, from previously DD.

In January 2008, Sy Scholfield quotes from Richard Bak's book, "Joe Louis: The Great Black Hope" (Da Capo Press, 1998), p. 6: "Her seventh and most famous offspring, Joseph Louis Barrow, came along on May 13, 1914. About eight o'clock that morning, while the rest of the family worked putting in that season's seed, an elderly midwife named Susan Radford helped Lillie deliver the eleven-pound baby in the front bedroom. He was named for his father's brother-in-law, Joe Louis Nichols. His birthplace, a ramshackle dwelling, still stands on Bell Chapel Road, about a mile off Route 50. LaFayette, the nearest town and the Chambers County seat is about six miles to the southeast."
