Biography
American First Lady, married to Abraham Lincoln on 4 November 1842. An ambitious wife, she spurred him on in his political goals and he won the presidential election in November 1860.
Mary was the third of six kids and age six when her mom died after childbirth. Her dad remarried and had another eight kids; his new wife, Betsey, was despised by all the Todd children. Mary felt abandoned and vulnerable, emotional scars that she carried all her life. Bright and a good student, she loved school, but options for a woman's life were limited. She fell in love with the rough-cut, ten-year-older lawyer whom she married.
Mary and Abe had four boys, Robert, Edward, William and Thomas (Tad) whom she raised mostly on her own as Abe was on the road a lot, lawyering and politicking. She held her kids excessively close so the blow was staggering when three-year-old Eddie died of TB in 1850 after 52 days illness. Mary herself began to have health problems, allergies, crippling headaches, and gynecological difficulties after the difficult birth of Tad in 1853. Her temper and wicked tongue became notorious.
Her triumph at becoming first lady was soon dimmed by the Civil War, which began on 12 April 1861 and cast a pall over the entire nation. The death everywhere came into her own home with that of 11-year-old Willie to typhoid in February 1862. She mourned for months. The greatest blow came on 14 April 1865, when she witnessed Abe's assassination at Ford's theater by a deranged actor. Mary dressed in black for the remaining 17 years of her life and claimed unbearable sorrow as her personal cross.
Six years later, in 1871, Tad died at 18 of lung disease. She became alienated from Robert, who felt that she was being obsessively emotional and irrationally extravagant. In 1875 he petitioned the courts to have her committed to an asylum, where she spent four humiliating months before she rescued by a woman lawyer, Myra Bradwell. She went to Europe for a few months and spent her remaining years in Springfield, never forgiving Robert. Mary died at 63, partially paralyzed, nearly blind, drugged on patent medicines and lonely, 16 July 1882.
