French vice-admiral who played an important role during the Crimean War in 1853, allowing the landing of troops and the blocking of Greek ports. Later, as squadron chief in command of the Mediterranean he brought about a temporary armistice between the Piedmontese troops and King Francis II of the Two Sicilies.
He died in Paris on 18 December 1876.
