Biography
French brother of serial killer Henri Désiré Landru (1869-1922) who murdered at least seven women in the village of Gambais between December 1915 and January 1919.
His father, Alexandre Landru, was the son of Louis Lucien Landru and Marie Félicité Adélie Flers. He became a furnace stoker at Forges de Vulcain. Her mother, Flore Henriquel, was a domestic seamstress and laundress. They married on 4 February 1864 in Noailles. Both his parents were ardent Catholics.
Charles Henri's older sister, Marguerite, was born illegitimate in 1854 in Noailles. She married in 1887 and had three children.
Charles Henri died on 15 May 1867 at 2:00 PM in Paris at the age of 8 months.
His brother, Henri Désiré Landru, was born two years after his death, in 1869. He married Marie-Catherine Rémy in 1893 and they had four children.
Michaël Mandl, who discovered the existence of Charles Henri when he happened across his birth certificate, notes that his middle name (Henri) became the first name of his brother (Henri Désiré), while his first name (Charles) was given by Henri Désiré Landru to his younger son.
Mandl writes that Henri Désiré Landru was probably named "Henri" and "Désiré" in honour of their deceased first son. Considering furthermore that the middle name of the last child of Henri Désiré Landru is Eugène, which means "well born", we understand that his first names (Charles Eugène) are read as "Charles is well born", perhaps as a sort of unconscious reparation for parental grief.
